Dear Readers,

Welcome to the March 2017 issue of Shine on Hollywood Magazine! As we say goodbye to the frosty winter season and welcome the boundless beauty of spring, we bring to you with great satisfaction our special edition of Top Asian Industry Professionals issue! There’s never shortage of talent in this town as we immerse you in the world of celebrity fashion design, and bring you up close to some of the hardest working designers in the industry, whose allure go beyond the camera flashes.

This issue we feature top fashion designer André Soriano. During his teens, André left the political upheaval in his native Philippines and immigrated to the US with his mother and siblings. Grasping the boundless opportunities that his new adoptive home offered, André used the resources at his disposal to achieve his dream of becoming a professional designer. His hard work paid off when he was invited to participate in a reality television show called Styled to Rock. Now working alongside the top talent in Hollywood, André is able to enjoy the fruits of his labor, while still giving back to the San Diego community, never forgetting the turn of fortune provided by the opportunities in America.

We’re also going to introduce you to contemporary still life and landscape artist, Charisse Abellana. Another artist hailing from the Philippines, Charisse’s roots taught her the closeness and value of family and extended families, while her life in America taught her the strength of the individual, and the prospect that comes with freedom of expression as an artist. Using oils, watercolor, charcoal, ink on paper and mixed media in work, she uses the thick, bold strokes a palette knife provides to convey her emotions in the compositions unique to her work. Charisse’s paintings have been auctioned, using the profits to help the underprivileged.

At the age of six, Kiki Wang took the first steps in her career as a fashion designer by sewing together outfits for her baby dolls. Even at that fledgling age, her illustrations were also admired and collected by her young peers, and the impression awoke a passion for design in the young girl. Kiki immersed herself in school and strove in her studies. But she never lost sight of her dream, and after finishing her formal education in finance, she continued to pursue a career in fashion design by taking more classes at a local school. After finding success as an entrepreneur, she took the next bold step and moved to the US to continue her studies in design. She went on to found the fashion label CSP. Since then, her designs have gleamed through red carpets here and abroad.

Spirit Guidance Listens

The Wilderness Series all began with a dream.

Determined to write my first book I started researching about the Cherokee Indians. Piles of research, books loaned from the library, and a foot high pile of spiral notebooks with notes about who I wanted to write about and why. Open encyclopedias, tagged pages lay strewn across the furniture and on the floor of our family room.

It was forced. It felt forced. I wasn’t listening to my voices. I should’ve known better but it had been such a long time, almost twelve years, since I had sat down to write. It was frustrating and I was ready to give up.

Then, the eagles returned. It was mating season. It was comforting, they were always near me. We had them flying overhead, nests in our backyard. They were my eagles.

At first I wasn’t paying attention to the dreams. I was dreaming about eagles. I set it aside as normal, typical… I had seen them earlier that day. That’s why I was dreaming about them. Until they had me fly with them.

Yes. Off I went flying beside them. Three nights in a row they took me to the same spot. Three nights the eagles would turn into Indian warriors after we landed. Three nights I heard them speak to me. It was a place I’d never been, had never seen. What was the dream trying to tell me? Where was I going? The hills were lush and green but in the distance the mountains were dark, almost black. I had no idea but being who I am, I was going to find out.

The rectangular table at the library was covered in books, opened to pictures of mountains from all over the United States. There was one picture from South Dakota that looked familiar. I took the book home and stared at the images of the Black Hills. I knew where I landed. I knew who the warriors were.

I knew who I was going to write about, the Lakota. A year later, with a huge amount of research under my belt, I started writing. Every once in a while the eagles would come back to me in my dreams and I embraced their guidance. I listened. (Yes, my Native American name that was given to me is Spirit Guidance.)

The Wilderness Series is a time travel saga about a modern day surgeon who finds herself in the wilds of Lakota territory, living through the Little Big Horn battle, and finding true love. It will make you laugh, cry, angry, and just about any other emotion you can think of, but in the end, there will be no regrets. A slight cliff-hanger in the first book gives subtle hints which help the reader see that it’s a happy for now.

Thank you for taking the time to visit.
Have a good moments day,
Pam Ackerson

As we say goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall, we boldly move forward and bring to you with anticipation, our first ever issue featuring Top Chef/Culinary Industry Professionals. There’s never shortage of talent in this town, as we present you with delicious inspiring stories from the gourmet kitchens of Hollywood and beyond. This month’s cover story features celebrity Gourmet Raw Vegan Chef, Be*Live. Brian James Lucas was born with dental and gastrointestinal disorders that threatened his life during childhood. Later as an adult facing legal troubles, and without formal culinary education, his initial investment in a raw vegan restaurant gave him the opportunity to develop his innate skills, and eventually Lucas reinvented himself using the new social media technologies, building a following as a celebrity chef and a pioneer of the gourmet raw vegan movement. If you’re curious about Raw Cuisine you won’t want to miss this article! Next up is Nomi Shannon, a living pioneer of the modern Gourmet Raw Food movement. After a series of health complications, Nomi gradually became a full Raw Vegan. After graduating from college at the age of 40, she became an educator in body cleansing using the raw lifestyle and recipes. Now at age 73, she’s in the best shape of her life running her own successful online business and has earned awards and accolades from the Raw Vegan community for her work and groundbreaking cook books. For those health-conscious readers interested in switching to “Raw,” look for tips on how to best make this salubrious decision. This month we are also featuring Chef Sean McDuff, who dropped out of school at the age of 17, and quickly realized the value of education. He went on to complete his GED. Sean found an interest in cooking and continued his journey by enrolling in the Art Institute of Atlanta, where he would go on to study the culinary arts. By the age of 20, Sean was winning awards and working in some of the hottest kitchens in the Atlanta area. He then went on to found Live2EatWell, a meal delivery service that offers an opportunity for families to eat healthy, locally-sourced, prepared meals in an effort to improve their well-being. DEL CASTILLO began as a CD project for family back in the winter of 2000 and has become a symbol of the cross-cultural power of music with their eclectic blend of Flamenco, Rock, Latin, Blues, and World music.

Between the release of their first CD, Brothers of the Castle back in 2001, to their 2006 release, Brotherhood, Del Castillo has received an astonishing 18 awards including SXSW/Austin Music “Album of the Year” Awards for Vida (2002) and Brotherhood (2006), “Band of the Year (2003)”, ASCAP’S “Best Independent Group of the Year (2005)”, and Austin Music Pundits “Best Live Act (2004)”.

Rolling Stone calls Del Castillo “tumbling brilliance on nylon-string classical guitars” with “eruptions of technique and taste (that) conjure images of Eddie Van Halen fronting early Santana (with an assist from the Gipsy Kings).

Film Director Robert Rodriguez attended a Del Castillo concert in 2002 and a great friendship developed between the two. Rodriguez then enlisted the group to contribute music to the soundtracks of his movies, such as “Spy Kids 3D”, “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”,“Sin City”, and “GRINDHOUSE”, and perform with him at the premieres. Rodriguez was so impressed with Del Castillo that he wanted to record with them, so together, they formed CHINGON and recorded an amazing electric rendition of the Mexican classic song, “Malaguena Salerosa”. Quentin Tarantino loved it so much that he re-did the ending sequence of “Kill Bill Vol. II” to fit the song into his movie.

By 2004, Del Castillo was touring nationwide across the country playing with such diverse acts as Styx, Los Lonely Boys, Ozomatli, Don Henley, Los Lobos, and Willie Nelson and continued tour non-stop through 2006. They have performed at three of Willie Nelson’s 4th Of July Picnics, and at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and they have made numerous national and local TV appearances.

Willie Nelson enjoyed Del Castillo so much that he re-recorded his song “I Never Cared For You” with the group (which is included on Del Castillo’s Brotherhood CD) and calls it “his favorite version”. Nelson has become a good friend of the band as well and the two look forward to touring together again soon.

During 2008, the band began playing major festivals all over the country and even Canada and widening its audience at a much more rapid rate. At California’s famous Strawberry Music Festival, they were deemed the highlight of the festival and broke the merchandise sales record. Immediately after their incendiary debut performance at the Vancouver Folk Festival in Canada, they were selected to play the headlining stage for 2009.

Rick and Mark del Castillo were recently selected in December 2008, by Gibson Global, to be two of only about SIX guitarists in the world to launch their new state-of the-art Dark Fire Gibson Les Paul guitar line.

The band continues to tour throughout the country, thriving on performing live and building new audiences, and songwriting and recording are a priority during breaks in their tour schedule.

The BOB Band

The BOB Band

The BOB Band

Members: Don Bailey, Brandon Turner, Kevin Saak, Tom Sweet, Mike Solle, Dierdre Kniffen

Prone to the fiery attitude of indie punk rockers and body surfers this music is a raw shot through the soul that’s not missing any bones of drunken amphetamine induced reality. These guys consciously hit farther into the raw cornering attitudes of rebellious country music. Their ‘matter of fact’ rockgrass style dawns the likes of ratrod jackets and Dead Kennedys shirts while footed up with Jack Purcells. Hailing from the Midwestern United States their evident diversity has taken them from performing melodies with Mickey Gilley to an all stage rock fury with Reverend Horton Heat and two international tours. A ‘UK’ fan described. “The Bob band has a lyrical skill of spinning a dark and twisting yarn with the raucous heavy playing and energy of a pub-brawl.” Noted by news journals to have “a live show of music passion so unexpected, it’s seen to be harmoniously epic.” Maverick Magazine Europe described them as “an outfit that knows how to balance energetic songs with emotionally created tunes which impress continually. They are a song writing gem.”
___________________________________________________

Formed by singer/songwriter Don Bailey in an abandoned train depot in Millstadt, Illinois in 1994. They released their first 10 song album(Earl) on compact disk a year later(1995). The second album, a six song EP(Black) was released on compact disk in 1998. Opening an original music venue in Belleville, Illinois using proceeds from album sales, Bailey and the band took ten years off from recording and only performed live shows at venues across the midwest. Bailey returned to the studio in 2009 and began writing the 3rd release(Greasy Side Down) It was originally intended to be a ‘backporch” solo style recording. The band caught wind of it after Baileys’ tracks had already been recorded. They joined in, recorded parts over Baileys’ original recordings and the album was released in 2010. The excitement of the new material brought Bailey together with Brandon Turner(bass) Kevin Saak(drums) and Jon Clark(guitar) to record the forth album ‘Time Served’ released December 11th, 2012.

The BOB Band-GREASY SIDE DOWN
Europe’s Maverick Magazine Review – July 2011
Releasing their third album, this four-piece band certainly knows how to create a well produced song that can only be described as awesome. This thirteen song record shows to the world that this Illinois band are steeped in country music history and their musical veins are saturated with, what I suspect, is many bottles of Southern Bourbon. The record does not always go for the jugular as this outfit knows how to balance energetic songs with emotionally created tunes which impress continually. As its title suggests, the stomping beat on Pickin Flowers allows for impressive guitar to be used in the mix. The same wondrous spirit can be linked with Black Hat which is the concluding track. With sublime guitar on this tune with the inclusion of a fine lap steel helps sum up this record perfectly as its care-free attitude is refreshing good.
-Russell Hill – Maverick Magazine / EUROPE

Elektrica – New Album

ELEKTRICA

Photo

ELEKTRICA is a new American singer-songwriter artist on the STBN Records label.

The Early Years

Elektrica showed musical promise from the age of three, learning to sing and playing many musical instruments, eventually focusing on the piano. By the age of sixteen she was the leader of a youth musical theater, working as director, composer, choreographer and designer. Her passion however was, and remains, to sing, and she eventually graduated Music College as a trained mezzo-soprano. She then turned from a promising career in opera and expanded into popular music, incorporating techno, pop and rock into her repertoire.

The next few years Elektrica spent exploring the world, immersing herself in different arts and cultures, meeting people, learning languages and developing as a songwriter and a musician.

The Present

The Elektrica project began in earnest in 2009 in the heart of Manhattan. This exciting new phenomenon incorporates a global network of contributing musicians, creating theatrical and evocative soundscapes that defy genre and style, led by Elektrica’s unique creativity and personality.

True to her theatrical roots, Elektrica is a master of creating vivid worlds of sound, aided by her ability to sound great at the top or the bottom of the register. Elektrica’s music has elements of pop and rock, of theatricality and virtuosity, of storytelling and innovation –all united by her powerful and absolutely unmistakable voice. Elektrica is the model of the 21st-century New York singer, drawing on a diverse pool of sounds that spans the globe yet remaining essentially American.
